The drugmaker’s decision to stop the sale of its erectile dysfunction drugs may be seen as a victory for those who want to regain their health status.
But for the vast majority of Americans who take ED drugs, they’re still embarrassed, and it’s hard to imagine why others might want to switch.
“It’s a shame to be doing that,” said Michael J. Baller, who heads the men’s health business company, Viatris. “It’s an embarrassing situation for everybody.”
When Viatris acquired Eroxon in 1998, its brand name for erectile dysfunction drug, PDE5i, it put the price tag on its competitors, including generic versions of the erectile dysfunction drug, sildenafil citrate.
The drugs, which are now under brand names like Viagra, Cialis and Levitra, are now the best-known erectile dysfunction drug for men. But for many others, the drug industry has shifted to the opposite end.
A Viatris executive told The Associated Press he’s worried about the way the industry affects men’s health. He said the industry doesn’t care about the safety of generic drugs and that it’s more about “the marketing than the drugs themselves.”
“I don’t think there’s a way for the industry to tell us what’s safe,” said Jorgen Hoote, Viatris’s senior vice president of product marketing and brand development.
The drugmaker has done a good job with the drugs in a number of markets. It’s getting older — it’s more expensive — and the drugs are still being sold by mail-order pharmacies.
The drugs don’t just sell brand-name drugs; they’re used for a number of different medical conditions. Some are for erectile dysfunction; others aren’t.
“It’s a big deal for us to have these drugs,” Jorgen said.
The industry has been trying to make drugs work for men who have a condition called “genital atrophy,” a condition where the genitals shrink in response to sexual stimulation, Hoote said. The drugs can help people with this condition, he said.
But he said there’s also a stigma about the condition. Men with this condition may avoid going to the doctors for tests, and they’re afraid to talk to their doctors.
“The stigma is so great,” Hoote said.
One of the most common concerns among men is about their sexual performance. Viagra, Cialis and Levitra — all drugs that work by boosting blood flow to the penis — all have this drug on top of them. Some may also benefit from counseling, Hoote said, or even medication.
“I think the only way we’ve really made this kind of situation possible is through the marketing,” he said. “We have the marketing and the sales force.”
In recent years, the companies have begun to shift their focus to men’s health. They’ve been pushing for treatments for erectile dysfunction for more than a decade and are also trying to sell generic versions of the drugs.
Viatris is one of the companies that started selling the erectile dysfunction drugs in 1998. It’s now marketing the generic versions, which are cheaper, and it’s trying to get a larger market.
“There’s been a time in the history of medicine when men and women were treated the same,” Jorgen said. “It’s the same in every area.”
The company’s marketing and development team has been trying to figure out what’s going on. The Viatris executive said a few of the drugs he has bought for men are for erectile dysfunction. He’s also trying to develop a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH, a condition that affects the urinary system.
“They’re very good at trying to do something for men who may not have the symptoms,” Jorgen said. “They’re great at trying to do something for women who may not have the symptoms.”
Many men with BPH also use ED drugs, he said.
